Short-term missions are wonderful opportunities for people to get involved in mission and for those on the mission-field to benefit from other people’s involvement in the work. Unfortunately for some – both those on the sending teams as well as those receiving teams – such outreaches can become extremely negative experiences with far-reaching negative effects.
Three long-time partners in mission initiated “Towards better Short-Term Mission”. These partners are:
- Hannes de Villiers from Building Hope Foundation, who did an in-depth study on short-term outreaches and who participated in more than 50 outreaches over the last 15 years;
- Arnau van Wyngaard from Shiselweni Home Based Care who is a full-time missionary in Swaziland and who has hosted dozens of short-term outreaches over a period of more than 30 years and
- Annelize Meyer, ministry coordinator at DRC Lynnwood Ridge’ Missions Office. This congregation has a dedicated mission’s office through which several missionaries (currently 17) have been supported since 1998.
